Samuel Pompeo Quintet brings choro and jazz together at Wine&Jazz Sessions with a free concert at Parque Villa-Lobos on April 12.
On April 12 at 12:30 p.m., the Samuel Pompeo Quintet takes the stage at Parque Villa-Lobos with a set designed to move choro out of the realm of tribute and back into the urgency of the present. Rather than revisiting the past, the group frames Brazilian tradition through a contemporary musical language.
Samuel Pompeo Quintet bridges choro and jazz
The link between choro and jazz runs deep. Both genres emerged in the late nineteenth century in different countries, shaped by European dance forms such as polka and mazurka alongside African rhythmic drive. Even so, they gradually developed along separate paths.
Samuel Pompeo’s work addresses that split head-on. As a result, his music folds in expanded harmony, rhythmic freedom and improvisation while keeping choro’s identity intact. It does not preserve the genre in amber. Instead, it places it in active dialogue with the present.
A repertoire without nostalgia
Marking ten years on the road, the quintet arrives at Wine&Jazz Sessions with a program driven by creative tension rather than nostalgia. The set includes Descendo a Serra by Pixinguinha and Benedito Lacerda, reworked through a jazz-oriented approach, alongside Amargura and Pé de Moleque by Radamés Gnattali.
The performance also features Naquele Tempo by Pixinguinha and Benedito Lacerda, plus Samuel Pompeo originals Passos Largos and Dodecafonando. The latter draws inspiration from Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve-tone language, expanding the group’s sonic palette even further.
The albums Que Descaída (2016) and Passos Largos (2022) provide the foundation. Still, the stage is where the project fully opens up, with room for risk, improvisation and real-time collective interplay.
Band lineup and festival
Alongside Samuel Pompeo, the group features Dino Barioni on guitar, Sidney Ferraz on piano, Gustavo Boni on double bass and Paulinho Vicente on drums. Together, they build a performance centered on intensity, listening and collective construction.
The concert is part of Wine&Jazz Sessions, held on April 11 and 12 at Parque Villa-Lobos in São Paulo. Admission is free with WinePass registration through Sympla.
