New autistic Barbie, created with ASAN, features inclusive design, headphones, and fidget spinner. Fashionista line arrives in Brazil in July focusing on diversity.
Mattel takes a historic step in inclusion by announcing the launch of its first doll with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The novelty joins the famous Barbie Fashionistas line and was developed to validate the sensory and communicative experiences of the community. The model arrives in Brazilian stores starting in July 2026.
To ensure accurate representation, the Barbie was created after 18 months of research in partnership with the Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN). The non-profit organization is run by autistic people and advocates for the rights of this population.
“Barbie has always strived to reflect the world children see and the possibilities they imagine, and we are proud to introduce our first autistic Barbie as part of this ongoing work,” says Jamie Cygielman, Global Head of Dolls at Mattel.
Inclusive design and sensory details
Unlike other models, the new doll features specific articulation in the elbows and wrists. This feature allows for “stimming” (self-stimulation), such as hand flapping, a common movement used by autistic individuals to process information or express emotions. Additionally, the doll’s gaze is slightly averted, reflecting the characteristic of avoiding direct eye contact.
The kit comes with functional accessories that dialogue with the routine of neurodivergent people. The doll brings a pink fidget spinner that actually spins, noise-canceling headphones to prevent sensory overload, and a tablet with an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) app.
“It is critical for young autistic people to see authentic and positive representations of themselves. The partnership with Barbie allowed us to share real insights throughout the design process,” emphasizes Colin Killick, Executive Director of ASAN.
Comfortable fashion and availability
The clothing was also designed for tactile comfort. The doll wears a loose-fitting purple dress made of soft fabric, minimizing friction with the skin, accompanied by flat shoes that ensure stability. The Barbie Fashionistas line already has over 175 versions, including dolls with Down Syndrome, vitiligo, and visual impairment.
The suggested price for Brazil is R$ 119.99.
