Eight non-stop days, millions of passengers, and an invisible operation: meet the professionals who keep MetrôRio running 24 hours during Rio’s Carnival 2026.
MetrôRio will operate continuously for eight days during Carnival 2026. To ensure the 24-hour operation runs with maximum efficiency, safety, and fluidity, the concessionaire mobilizes a strategic and highly specialized task force that goes far beyond the roles of drivers, security agents, and station operators.
Behind the scenes, the Information Technology team monitors systems, network infrastructure, and complex servers that support train and station operations. Meanwhile, maintenance teams work preventively and proactively, ensuring equipment reliability and service continuity even during peak demand periods, such as special carnival operations.
At the same time, crew schedulers coordinate shifts, anticipate demands, and ensure coverage of all positions at any time of day or night. These are crucial functions, often invisible to the public, but essential for millions of passengers to rely on fast, safe, and efficient transportation during one of the city’s busiest moments.
The technology behind the operation
One of these invisible functions is performed by Daniel Moraes, an Information Technology analyst with the concessionaire since 2021. He knows the complexity of the operation very well.
Our department is responsible for all the technology infrastructure that serves the Operations Control Center (CCO). Through them, we control the traffic system, train traction, and even power. For the CCO to monitor operations, these services must be fully functional Daniel Moraes, MetrôRio Information Technology analyst
The guardians of drivers’ routines
Roberval Benício and Tulaine Senra work as Traffic Assistants and are responsible for managing drivers’ routines. He works at Central do Brasil/Centro station; she works at Maria da Graça station.
Our function is intense and, at the same time, very dynamic. We monitor drivers’ shift change times, organize meal and rest intervals, among other tasks. While many passengers enjoy carnival, we work behind the scenes ensuring everyone can come and go safely Tulaine Senra, Traffic Assistant with six years at MetrôRio
With 18 years at MetrôRio, Roberval took on the Traffic Assistant role a year ago and reinforces the importance of his area.
It’s challenging work. We direct drivers to the trains they will operate and need to pay attention to schedules, tracks, and stations where handovers will occur. Everything must be very well coordinated so that shift changes don’t impact train departures. We basically organize the drivers’ routines within the operation Roberval Benício, Traffic Assistant
Maintenance engineering in action
In the technical area, engineer Máximo Santana Chaves is one of those responsible for mechanical maintenance. He reviews procedures, identifies opportunities for component improvement, analyzes failures, and plans projects focused on operation and technical support.
Maintenance Engineering works together with other teams on the main train systems, such as doors, air conditioning, and traction. We work to ensure material availability, improve processes, and monitor strategic indicators, ensuring all activities are executed with excellence Máximo Santana Chaves, mechanical maintenance engineer
The human perspective behind schedules
Nearly ten years at MetrôRio, Ana Beatriz Ramos has been responsible since 2023 for creating schedules and strategic planning for Station Operator teams.
Being a scheduler goes far beyond allocating people to positions. It’s having a human perspective, adapting available staff to operational needs, and considering that there are people with stories, limits, and particularities. Scheduling is work of great importance within the company — after all, without schedules, there is no operation Ana Beatriz Ramos, crew scheduler
