The series “Hortência and Paula” chronicles Brazil’s basketball legends, premiering March 8 on sportv and streaming on Globoplay.
For years, women’s basketball in Brazil was defined by two names: Hortência Marcari and “Magic” Paula Gonçalves. Their on-court rivalry, shared leadership in the national team, and Olympic silver medal left a lasting mark on the sport. Directed by Eduardo Hunter Moura, the new documentary series “Hortência and Paula” tells this story in four episodes.
Produced by Hunter Filmes and sportv, the show premieres on March 8, International Women’s Day, at 11 p.m. Each 30-minute episode revisits key moments of their intertwined careers and the legacy they built over three decades since their Olympic success.
“Talking about Paula means remembering Hortência. Talking about Hortência means remembering Paula,” says Hortência in the series.
Combining rare archive footage and emotional testimonies, the docuseries explores both rivalry and sisterhood under the pressures of international success. Paula recalls: “Our generation broke every barrier in front of us and chased what we believed in.”
According to director Eduardo Hunter Moura, the story goes beyond the game: “It’s a roller coaster of emotions and courage that redefined women’s sports in Brazil.”
The first two episodes air March 8 at 11 p.m. and 11:45 p.m., and the last two on March 9 at 5 p.m. and 5:45 p.m., on sportv. All episodes will also be available on Globoplay (Premium plan).
