A 57-meter iron-and-glass sculpture crowns a hilltop in Argentine Patagonia, turning Easter into an unexpected artistic and spiritual journey.
Most travelers link Patagonia to frozen lakes, fly-fishing, and alpine villages. Few know that one of the region’s most compelling Easter experiences is rooted in faith. About 42 km from San Martín de los Andes, in the province of Neuquén, the small town of Junín de los Andes is home to Vía Christi, a religious theme park that transforms a hillside into an artistic journey through the life of Jesus.
Virtually unknown to international tourists, Vía Christi was designed as a space for dialogue between Christian spirituality and Latin American identity. Its guiding motto, “Father, that we may be one,” frames a proposal that goes well beyond the traditional Stations of the Cross. Across 23 stations spread along roughly 1 km of trail, visitors walk not only through the Passion but also through key moments of Christ’s public life, from the Incarnation to the miraculous catch of fish after the Resurrection.
A Latin American retelling of Christ’s life
The trail features 55 sculptures. Early stations depict the Baptism, the Temptations, and the Beatitudes. Further along, visitors encounter the Lord’s Prayer, the multiplication of the loaves, and the washing of feet. Only then does the path enter the more familiar sequence: the Last Supper, betrayal, trial, crucifixion, and death. The route concludes with scenes of the Resurrection and Christ’s appearances to his disciples.
What sets Vía Christi apart is its symbolic lens. The park draws parallels between the Gospel and the contemporary history of Latin America, weaving in social and cultural references from across the continent. The influence of Mapuche culture, which is deeply rooted in the region, is openly present. Junín de los Andes is home to more than six indigenous communities that are active in daily city life, and that heritage shapes both the sculptures and the park’s artistic concept.
The intention is to spark not only religious reflection but also historical and identity-based contemplation. For many Argentine visitors, the experience carries particular weight during Holy Week, when groups organize walks and celebrations along the route.
Cristo Luz and the mountain
Beyond the 23rd station, visitors can continue up an additional 1 km to the park’s highest point on Cerro San Pedro. There stands Cristo Luz, a sculpture measuring 57 meters long by 47 meters wide, built from iron and glass in the form of a three-dimensional stained-glass window.
The work depicts a risen Christ emerging from the mountain. The translucency of the materials allows natural light to pass through, creating shifting visual effects throughout the day. From the summit, visitors can take in the valley below and, in the distance, the silhouette of Lanín volcano, one of the region’s defining landmarks.
The iron-and-glass structure acts as a living stained-glass window: natural light transforms the sculpture hour by hour, with Lanín volcano rising in the background.
Faith woven into the destination
Vía Christi is not Junín’s only religious landmark. The town also hosts the Santuario Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, tied to local devotion and to Blessed Ceferino Namuncurá, an important figure in Patagonian spirituality.
At the same time, Junín de los Andes is firmly established as a nature destination. The town has international recognition for fly-fishing on the Chimehuín, Malleo, and Quilquihue rivers. It sits close to Lanín National Park and Lake Huechulafquen, and offers hiking, horseback riding, and a range of outdoor activities.
That combination makes it easy to build a hybrid holiday itinerary: spiritual in the morning, scenic in the afternoon. Visitors can walk the park at sunrise and spend the rest of the day exploring the Andean landscape or the town center.
