Rui Morschel will serve 1,200 portions of barreado, a dish with Geographical Indication, at Portugal’s largest tourism fair. Paraná promotes gastronomy as an international strategy.
Paraná marks its presence at the 36th edition of the Better Tourism Lisbon Travel Market (BTL), the largest tourism event held in Portugal and one of the main showcases in the sector in Europe. Between February 25 and March 1, 2026, the Viaje Paraná stand – a promotional body linked to the Tourism Secretariat (Setu-PR) – will bring together companies, destinations, and strategic partners to promote the state to the European market.
The highlight of the participation will be gastronomy, with chef and communicator Rui Morschel representing Paraná by bringing Barreado from the Coast of Paraná, recognized in December 2022 with a Geographical Indication (GI) seal. Official ambassador of GIs for ABRIG – Brazilian Association of Geographical Indications, Morschel has established himself as one of the main communicators on the subject in the country.
Daily preparation and local ingredients
Over the five days of the event, Rui and his team will serve 250 daily portions of the dish, totaling around 1,200 portions. Approximately 100 kilos of ingredients will be used, including 70 kilos of beef, 20 kilos of onions, and 10 kilos of seasonings and complements. The barreado will be prepared daily, about 20 kilos per day, and served fresh to preserve flavor, aroma, and texture.
Morschel’s participation occurs through ARSIMER – Association of Restaurants and Similar Establishments of Morretes and Region, the entity that officially represents the service of the dish at the fair. Since 2025, Rui has been a member of the institution, working as a chef and promoter.
Professional milestone
Nationally recognized after gaining prominence on MasterChef Amateurs, Rui dedicated himself to promoting certified products, creating series such as “Origins of My Paraná” and “Contains BR,” which travel throughout Brazil presenting territories and products with GI seals.
In addition to being a GI from Paraná, barreado is a typical Brazilian dish. Serving it in Europe means bringing Brazilian gastronomy with identity, history, and official recognition. We are presenting a product protected by Geographical Indication, something highly valued by Europeans. Being the representative of my state, my country, and our local products is one of the high points of my career Rui Morschel, chef and ambassador of Geographical Indications
Sustainable and authentic experience
At BTL, barreado will be served directly from the traditional clay pot, accompanied by cassava flour and banana, in biodegradable and sustainable packaging, aligned with Paraná’s positioning as a national reference in sustainability. Transport in Lisbon follows a technique learned by Rui during his volunteer work in the SOS Kitchens program during the floods in Rio Grande do Sul in 2023: the barreado is stored in thermal boxes, ensuring it stays hot and at the ideal texture throughout the fair.
The expectation is that the European public will get to know Paraná through its flavors as well. “From experience at events like this, what usually draws the most attention is the combination of beef with banana — they’ve never seen that. It’s always the first comment, along with the distinctive flavor of cumin,” says Morschel.
