Florianópolis resort takes home the 32nd Expressão de Ecologia Prize for Environmental Management, backed by a decade of structured ESG practices and 44 ha of preserved Atlantic Forest.
Brazil’s top environmental award goes to Costao
Costao do Santinho Resort has been named one of the winners of the 32nd Expressão de Ecologia Prize — Brazil’s most traditional and recognized environmental award. The property was honored in the Environmental Management (Marketing Sector) category for its project Environmental Management Program – Integrated Environmental and ESG Management System of Costao do Santinho.
Founded in 1993 by Editora Expressão and endorsed by Brazil’s Ministry of the Environment, the award has received 3,541 project entries throughout its history. In the 2025–2026 edition, 146 projects competed, and 54 winners were selected, representing 40 organizations from Brazil’s three Southern states and São Paulo. Winners receive the Troféu Onda Verde (Green Wave Trophy), are featured in Revista Líderes de Expressão, and will attend the official ceremony in Florianópolis — date to be announced soon.
A decade of structured environmental governance
The recognition caps a journey that began in 2016, when Costao launched its Integrated Environmental Management System (SIGA). The system continuously organizes, monitors, and improves the resort’s critical operations: waste management, effluent treatment, water quality monitoring, conservation, and environmental education.
Nestled within a sensitive stretch of Atlantic Forest, the resort preserves 44 hectares through the Morro das Aranhas Private Natural Heritage Reserve (RPPN). This commitment directly supports biodiversity conservation and the maintenance of ecological corridors in the Florianópolis region. Operations also include a dedicated Effluent Treatment Plant (ETE), specialized waste management with monthly indicators, and continuous water quality analysis.
Structured ESG and data-driven decisions
In 2024, the resort moved into a fully structured ESG management model, broadening its tracking of environmental, social, and governance indicators. Monthly reports now cover water and energy consumption, waste generation, greenhouse gas emissions, ETE performance, legal compliance, and ESG risk analysis. The integration of all data streams strengthened governance and deepened transparency with stakeholders.
“Beyond meeting legal requirements, sustainability must be woven into the company’s strategy and governance. We built processes, indicators, and routines that let us track results, mitigate risks, and make evidence-based decisions. Environmental management is no longer a set of isolated actions — it has become a permanent model of efficiency, accountability, and long-term vision.” José Cleiton Tabalipa, Administrative Co-President of Costao do Santinho Resort
With this award, Costao do Santinho cements its standing as a national benchmark in sustainable tourism, blending hospitality, innovation, and environmental stewardship into an auditable, evidence-based management model built for lasting results.
