Bonito, Brazil’s eco tourism icon, brings its carbon-neutral model to the global climate debate at the One Planet Roundtable.
Mato Grosso do Sul takes the spotlight at the One Planet Global Roundtable – Practical Solutions for a Climate Resilient Tourism Future, organized by the Green Initiative, which gathers experts and destinations committed to sustainable responses to climate change in tourism.
At the heart of the presentation is Bonito, a global reference in sustainable ecotourism and one of Brazil’s greatest examples of responsible travel. Since 2023, the destination has earned multiple international awards recognizing its leadership in environmental management.
Bonito became the world’s first carbon-neutral ecotourism destination, after completing a full emissions inventory and implementing structured strategies to reduce and offset its environmental impact. The achievement reflects public policies that place sustainability at the core of Mato Grosso do Sul’s tourism development.
The model combines collaborative environmental governance, strict visitor capacity control, and continuous monitoring of crystal-clear rivers, caves, and fragile natural sites. This partnership between public authorities, entrepreneurs, and the local community turned Bonito into a global success case of balance between conservation and economic growth.
What Mato Grosso do Sul brings to the global discussion goes beyond scenery. It’s a statement that tourism can mean growth, protection, and meaningful visitor experience — all in harmony.
By sharing its experience on the world stage, the state reinforces its message: travel and development can coexist with nature preservation.
