For the season finale celebrating 20 years of Espelho, Lázaro Ramos turns the spotlight on the crew that has built the show behind the scenes.
For the first time in two decades, the technical team behind “Espelho” — one of Brazil’s most acclaimed interview programs — trades places with the guests. In the final episode of the season “Espelho – 20 Anos Depois” (Espelho – 20 Years Later), airing on Canal Brasil on Friday, April 17, at 10 PM, host Lázaro Ramos welcomes the colleagues who have helped shape every episode.
The team behind the magic
Sound technician Vilson Almeida, co-directors Anderson Quack and Renato de Paula, logger André Pacheco, camera operator J. Vitorino, costume designer Bettine Silveira, and producer Cristina Ferreira all took seats in front of the camera to share stories spanning two decades of Brazilian television. Former team members also appeared, including producer Tânia Rocha and writer-director Elisio Lopes Jr.
“Espelho” as a school for life
Among the most moving testimonials was that of logger André Pacheco, who described what the program has meant to him personally.
I often say that ‘Espelho’ was my great school of life. It was listening to Zezé Motta that I learned about prejudice, about racism, about the difficulties she faced. It was listening to Criolo that I learned about the political hardships Brazil was going through. By listening to these great names the program introduced me to, I kept learning about life. ‘Espelho’ was my school and shaped who I am as a person. — André Pacheco, logger
Costume designer Bettine Silveira added her own definition: “It is an anthropological, philosophical, and sociological program that addresses every layer of humanity.”
Memorable formats and iconic guests
The group revisited some of the show’s most creative phases. Co-director Anderson Quack recalled a standout format with particular fondness.
I loved the segment where Lazinho would drive to pick up his guests and film everything on the way. Seu Jorge was especially emblematic — it ended at Largo das Neves in Santa Teresa, where he played his first Farofa Carioca show, and TV later picked up on that. ‘Espelho’ was a pioneer in so many ways; we were always focused on doing something new for the audience. — Anderson Quack, co-director
Lázaro Ramos laughed remembering the season when he decided to operate the camera himself while conducting interviews — an experiment that produced notoriously blurry footage and off-center framing.
Going global: international guests
The team also looked back on the remote-recording season, which brought international voices to the program for the first time — including Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and American actor Terry Crews. That period proved the show’s appeal could travel far beyond Brazilian borders.
A standing ovation to close it all out
At the end of the episode, Lázaro Ramos introduces the new professionals who made it possible for the crew to be interviewed, inviting everyone in front of the camera. The season closes with a heartfelt round of applause — a symbolic tribute to everyone who has kept “Espelho” alive for 20 years.
