A first-of-its-kind guide by Setur-SP maps 16 indigenous villages across 11 cities, offering travelers immersive cultural experiences rooted in ancestral traditions.
The São Paulo state government launched on Tuesday (14) the Indigenous Villages Tourism Guide, a groundbreaking publication that places Brazil’s native peoples at the heart of the state’s cultural tourism offer. The launch took place at the WTM Latin America trade fair, held at Expo Center Norte in São Paulo city.
16 villages, 11 cities, one shared heritage
Developed by the São Paulo State Secretariat of Tourism and Travel (Setur-SP) in partnership with the Secretariat of Justice and Citizenship, the guide covers villages from diverse ethnic groups spread across the state. The destinations are located in Arco-Íris, Avaí, Braúna, Guarulhos, Itaporanga, Miracatu, Pariquera-Açu, Peruíbe, São Paulo, São Sebastião, and Ubatuba.
The guide goes far beyond a simple listing. It works as a cultural immersion itinerary, connecting visitors with the daily life, knowledge, and traditions of indigenous communities.
Experiences that bridge past and present
Among the experiences available at the villages:
- Guided trails through indigenous territories
- Traditional singing and dance performances
- Body painting sessions
- Indigenous gastronomy
- Storytelling and cultural object exhibitions
- Medicinal plant practices, traditional agriculture, and indigenous games
In addition to the villages, the guide highlights the Museum of Indigenous Cultures and the Índia Vanuíre Historical and Pedagogical Museum as complementary spaces for cultural preservation and education.
Community tourism as a development tool
For Tourism Secretary Ana Biselli, the publication marks a strategic milestone. “The idea is to diversify the state’s tourism offer with initiatives ranging from nautical to cultural, from rural to sports tourism, with a focus on innovation and regional development. The new guide is an important step toward promoting more conscious and inclusive tourism. By valuing indigenous villages, we recognize the fundamental role of native peoples and encourage experiences that honor their customs and create opportunities,” she stated.

By promoting community-based tourism, the guide supports income generation within villages, strengthens indigenous autonomy, and helps preserve knowledge and traditions that are central to Brazilian identity.
