A Masterpiece Returns to the Spotlight
For five years, one of the largest painted canvases integrated into a theatre’s architecture in Brazil was kept from public view. Now, following repairs to the electric rigging system, the Pano de Boca (Stage Curtain) of the Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro is back in its rightful place — and visitors can experience it up close once again.
On Monday, March 2, at 11 a.m., the Theatro Municipal is hosting a Special Guided Tour dedicated to the work “The Influence of the Arts on Civilization”, by Italo-Brazilian painter Eliseu Visconti. With only 40 spots available, this is a genuinely rare cultural opportunity.
Behind the Curtain: 90 Minutes of History and Art
The 90-minute tour is led by educators from the Petrobras Art Education Sector and the team from the Documentation Center of the Fundação Teatro Municipal (CEDOC/FTMRJ). Participants will explore backstage stories, technical details, and the artistic legacy of one of the theatre’s greatest treasures.

About the Stage Curtain
Created for the theatre’s inauguration in 1909, the Pano de Boca is among the most significant works embedded in the building’s architecture and a landmark of Brazilian visual arts. The composition is an allegory of the arts, featuring female figures representing music, dance, poetry, and theatre.
Strongly influenced by the Art Nouveau movement and European academic tradition, Visconti crafted a sophisticated composition defined by graceful forms, rich detail, and chromatic harmony. Far beyond a scenic element, the work stands as a symbol of Brazil’s cultural ambitions at the dawn of the 20th century.
