Nonatto Coelho opens a free exhibition in Inhumas, bringing together key works from his career with accessibility features for visitors.
“Nonatto Coelho 4 Décadas de Arte” opens on Friday (04/17), at 7 p.m., at Espaço Cultural Nonatto Coelho in Inhumas. Admission is free, and visits run through May 10. The exhibition also includes accessibility resources for visitors with visual and hearing disabilities.
Curated by Sanatan, described in the release as a pioneer of Naturalism in Goiás, the show highlights the enduring place of art in human life, from prehistoric caves to the present day. For this edition, visitors will see paintings, objects, and an installation of engraving on photographs, a format closely associated with the artist’s career.
That body of work was presented internationally between 1999 and 2002, with exhibitions in Athens, Bologna and Italy, according to the production notes. As a result, the Inhumas exhibition also revisits an important period in Nonatto Coelho’s international path.
Nonatto Coelho and four decades of work
Over four uninterrupted decades, Nonatto Coelho has exhibited in Brazil and abroad. The artist connects this milestone to his first professional participation in the 5th National Art Salon, held at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro in 1982.
“I celebrate four decades of artistic trajectory, since my first professional participation in the 5th National Art Salon, held at the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro in 1982,” the artist says.
He also notes that time moves quickly when people do what they love. In that sense, the new exhibition stands as an invitation to reflect on the work produced across the years.
“I hope my production can spark questions in those willing to come and closely see part of what I have created over the last decades. I always believe the best is yet to come, but for now I place on the table what it was possible to accomplish, with great pleasure,” says Nonatto Coelho.
The exhibition is sponsored by the Aldir Blanc Law through Brazil’s Ministry of Culture. It brings together paintings representing different phases of Nonatto Coelho’s artistic journey. At the same time, it works as a new cut of the exhibition shown in January this year at MAG – Museum of Art of Goiânia.
This version also includes works painted during the period when the artist lived in Greece. Therefore, the selection expands the dialogue between memory, displacement and artistic maturity.
Artist background
Born in Montalvânia, Minas Gerais, Nonatto Coelho has been drawing since childhood. He began painting with a brush at age 18. At 19, he entered an art competition in his city, GREMI, and was selected alongside Cleber Gouvêa and Carlos Sena to represent Goiás at the 5th National Salon of Modern Art in 1982.
The exhibition promoted by FUNARTE took place at MAM – the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. From that point on, the artist built a steady career, marked by exhibitions and awards in major Brazilian art salons.
